Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a virus that causes liver disease. People infected with hepatitis A can spread it to others. You can contract hepatitis A if you come into contact with food or liquids contaminated or if you have personal contact with someone already infected. In rare cases hepatitis A can cause liver failure and death. It’s important to get your vaccine before travelling to areas known for contracting hepatitis A.

International travelers going to countries where hepatitis A is common should get their vaccinations. Hepatitis A is given in three doses. If you don’t plan on getting all three doses before you travel, at least ensure you get one as soon as possible. At our travel clinic at St Mary’s Pharmacy via Restore clinic, we offer information and services along with vaccinations. Get in touch today!

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a virus that causes liver disease; this is due to it being in your blood and bodily fluids. People infected with hepatitis B virus can spread it to others; this is due to sharing personal care items. Hepatitis B occurs in nearly every part of the world but is more common in some countries in Asia, Africa, South America and others. People travelling such as medical tourists have a chance of contracting the virus.

It will be in your best interests to have your vaccinations when travelling to fully protect yourself. Unvaccinated travelers of all ages going to countries where hepatitis B is common should receive their vaccine. You will receive your vaccine in 2 or 3 doses before you travel. If your trip is soon, speak to your doctor about getting a combination of both hepatitis A-B vaccines.

Typhoid

Travellers can contract Typhoid fever in places with poor sanitation and hygiene such as Africa or south America.

If you’re going to be staying in areas with poor sanitation and food hygiene you should receive your vaccine. There are 2 main vaccines available to prevent typhoid fever these are the VI vaccine (given as a single injection) and TY21a vaccine (given as 3 capsules to take on alternate days). For a consultation on typhoid fever come visit our travel clinic at St Mary’s Pharmacy via Restore clinic.

Whether you have received your vaccine for typhoid or not, it’s important to take basic precaution’s when travelling in countries where typhoid fever is present. Only drink bottled water that’s properly sealed, avoid having ice cream or ice in your drinks and avoid uncooked fruit and vegetables.

Diphtheria, tetanus & polio

A combined vaccine of diphtheria, polio and tetanus is given to children of all ages in the UK. Diphtheria is a highly contagious infection that affects the nose and throat, and sometimes the skin. It’s rare in the UK, there’s a small risk of catching it if you travel to some parts of the world. The best way to avoid having diphtheria while traveling is to be fully vaccinated against it.

Meningitis ACWY (for Hajj and umrah)

Vaccines against some types of meningococcal meningitis is usually recommended if you’re travelling to areas at risk and your planned activities put you at higher risk, for instance a traveler in close contact with the local population. High-risk areas for meningococcal meningitis include parts of Africa and Saudi Arabia during mass gatherings of Hajj or Umrah. If traveling to high-risk areas you should be vaccinated against meningococcal meningitis with a menACWY vaccine, also known as the quadrivalent meningococcal meningitis vaccine. Come to our travel clinic at St Mary’s Pharmacy via Restore clinic for a consultation with our medical team.

Anti-malarial tablets

Anti-malarial tablets reduce your risk of getting malarial while travelling. It’s recommended to do this at least 4-6 weeks before you travel. For more information regarding anti-malarial tablets contact our travel clinic at St Mary’s Pharmacy via Restore clinic.

Vaccinations are available to help protect you and your family against serious diseases found in certain parts of the world. Our specially trained Pharmacist’s will offer relevant advice to meet your individual requirements and for any travel concern’s you may have regarding your health.

  1. Age and Health: Some medical conditions may limit your ability to receive vaccinations.
